Recovery, in their own words

Black, red and white rice — a warming sitting month staple

“This recovery, the fifth time around, has been completely different than the other four.”

With my first I got depressed. This time I rested — but in a different way, more intentional and mindful, with the intention of healing my body. Emily walked me through why I was resting and what my body was recovering from, and my food was in line with all of it. I absolutely loved the food; there wasn't a meal I didn't like. The sweet black vinegar rice contracted my uterus and cleaned everything out — my bleeding actually ended way earlier with Vera than with any of my other four babies.

Papaya, snow fungus and goji berries

“I almost lost my life in pregnancy — and by three weeks postpartum I felt great.”

My toughest pregnancy — I tanked early, went on home healthcare with IVs and infusions, lost a ton of weight and couldn't think or function. I thought being so depleted would make healing take longer. Instead, by about three weeks postpartum I had energy and a clear mind, I could walk with no pain. My body craved whole foods, not treats. I produced more milk quicker, felt balanced and regulated and happier — no depression, no anxiety. Emily's program is so clear and simple that anybody could do it.

Sweet potato and ginger — increased on day 12 to help the body recover

“After the 28 days, I felt replenished. I felt whole. I felt like me.”

My other six births left me feeling overwhelmed, stressed and anxious. The sitting month gave me permission to take care of myself and heal in ways I never had. On the 12th day ginger is increased to help the uterus contract — my other births I bled seven or eight weeks; with this I only bled till three and a half. My milk came in sooner than any of my other babies, and the weeks of nursing pain simply weren't there. After 28 days I was ready to take on my family again, because I'd taken time for me.

Red dates and longan — nourishing recovery fruits

“I was able to help my body heal, and bond with my baby boy.”

I'm so grateful Emily introduced me to the Chinese sitting month. Her knowledge, encouragement and experience guided me through postpartum with my fifth baby. With my other births I would try to get back to ‘normal’ as quickly as possible — but by preparing myself and my family for this special time of rest and excellent nutrition, I was able to tailor an empowering, beautiful recovery from Emily's incredible knowledge of this ancient practice.

Newborn baby — thriving after the sitting month

“It took me at least 3 months with my first to feel the way I feel now — and my baby isn't even 2 months old.”

My biggest fear was my mental health; my first postpartum was kind of a nightmare. This time, preparing for what was coming was a huge benefit for me and my family. It's amazing looking back on the 30 days and seeing how happy and healthy I felt by just the nutrition alone. My baby was born 3 weeks early at 7lb 5oz and was 11lb 13oz at 7 weeks, exclusively breastfed with no reflux or constipation during the 30 days. I truly believe the sitting month and the food helped us both tremendously.
